Saudi Aramco has discovered a new gas field in the northern part of the kingdom, the state-owned Saudi Press Agency said.

Preliminary tests showed Jalameed Well-3, located some 90 kilometres east of the city of Tarif in the Jalamid area, flowed at a rate of 12.1 million cubic feet a day (cfd).

“Initial estimates show that the gas can be exploited commercially,” the agency cited Petroleum and Mining Minister Ali Al-Naimi. “This well can produce greater quantities under normal production conditions,” he added.

The largest energy company said its gas reserves stood at 267 trillion cubic feet in 2008 and Aramco’s daily gas production averaged 8.3 billion cubic feet per day.

The kingdom recently announced it would invest around 450 billion riyals (120 billion dollars) in oil and petrochemical projects over the coming six years.
