Hassi Berkine: Sonatrach Will Build its First Photovoltaic Power Plant "On Own Funds"

The SONATRACH Group intends to launch in 2022 a project to build a photovoltaic power plant on "own funds" at the level of the Hassi Berkine basin (wilaya of Ouargla), indicated to APS the central director of new resources of the Group, Youcef Khanfar.

After the construction of a first station in this basin, in partnership with the Italian Group ENI, SONATRACH is preparing to carry out "alone" its first photovoltaic station, Mr. Khanfar told APS on the sidelines of the 10th edition. of the International Energy and Hydrocarbons Exhibition (NAPEC 2021), which ends this Thursday.

Thus, according to Mr. Khanfar, the construction of this photovoltaic power plant, with a capacity of 10 megawatts, “should be launched in 2022”. As such, he informed that the electricity produced by this station should supply the oil sites of the Hassi Berkine basin.

“SONATRACH is preparing its subsidiaries to produce photovoltaic stations,” said Mr. Khanfar, believing that Algeria has all the assets to embark on this niche. “We have large spaces and solar radiation in Algeria can reach 3,000 hours per year. Also, desert sand is full of selenium, a component that goes into the composition of photovoltaic solar cells,” he said.

Algeria has succeeded in acquiring, in recent years, “significant” know-how in the field of solar energy and the photovoltaic industry. Its solar potential, one of the best in the world, combined with the Government's strong desire to initiate the energy transition by setting up a national photovoltaic industry, can rapidly propel it into this field in the years to come, according to specialists.

The 10th edition of the NAPEC 2021 show recorded the participation of 480 exhibitors representing 40 countries with the presence of operators in the oil and gas sector, importers of products and services related to the two sectors, according to the organizers.
