On February 13, Well Pengshen-6 of PetroChina Southwest Oil & Gasfield Company (Southwest Oil & Gasfield), located in the Penglai gas area, was successfully drilled and cemented. With a depth of 9,026 meters, the well has set a new record as the deepest vertical gas well in Asia.

Located in the Penglai gas area in Sichuan's Yanting County, the well is a key exploration well deployed to tap the potential of the Dengying Formation in the Penglai gas area. Undertaken by CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Limited ("CCDC"), the drilling commenced on July 5, 2021, with a designed depth of 7,990 meters. In order to further explore the potential in the deeper strata, the drilling depth was eventually increased to 9,026 meters.

The drilling of the well was faced with challenges such as extreme depths (>9,000 m), extreme temperatures (>200 ℃), ultra-high pressure levels (>150MPa) and high sulfur content (>30g/m3), Southwest Oil & Gasfield and CCDC worked closely together, leveraged respective management and technology strengths, overcame various technical challenges and ensured the smooth proceeding of the drilling.
