PETRONAS together with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) collaborated to develop a glossary of environmental, social and governance ( ESG ) terms in Malay.

Representatives of PETRONAS, DBP, academics, government bodies and the oil and gas industry will join forces to implement this two-year project which will involve compiling up to 1,000 terms to contribute to ESG-related communication in the Malay language.

A cooperation agreement was signed recently between the two parties, witnessed by the Chairman of PETRONAS, Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh and the Chairman of the DBP Board of Directors, National Artist Dato' Dr Mohd Anwar Ridhwan.

Mohd Bakke said this initiative is important for the delivery of a clear message on the topic of sustainability and climate change in line with increasing demands for transparency and reporting on ESG .

"The emergence of new terminology that is in line with progress in the energy sector is important for the communication needs of industry players, higher education institutions and the general public. Strengthening the vocabulary can be a catalyst for the mastery of knowledge in ESG- related fields ," he added.

Mohd Anwar said DBP welcomes any cooperation to strengthen the use of the Malay language in various fields of science and industry."

DBP is very pleased to be able to work with PETRONAS for the first time. This cooperation agreement is a historic moment and a starting point for establishing a strategic relationship and closer understanding between DBP and  PETRONAS through the implementation of various programs," he added.

The cooperation agreement is proof of the commitment of PETRONAS and DBP in improving ESG communication for national inclusion and outreach.

Once completed, this ESG glossary will be placed on the DBP Malay Literature Reference Center (PRPM) website for public use.
