Italy has clinched a deal with Algeria to boost the capacity of an existing Mediterranean gas pipeline linking the two countries. The pipeline's capacity will rise to 27.5 billion cubic meters a year from current 21 bcm a year after an upgrading of the section laid on the Algerian and the adjoining Tunisian territory.

Italian oil and gas company Eni SpA has an agreement with Algerian oil and gas firm Sonatrach for the supply of natural gas through the pipeline.

The 2,200-kilometer pipeline, which extends from the Sahara desert to the Po Valley in northern Italy, passes through Tunisia and crosses the Mediterranean at depths of up to 600 meters in the Sicilian Channel.
