(Reuters) - China has short-listed six firms for its first auction of shale gas exploration blocks, according to an official Xinhua News Agency newsletter published on Friday.

The auction of eight shale gas blocks might be held in May, Xinhua's China Oil, Gas and Petrochemicals newsletter quoted an official of the Ministry of Land and Resources as saying.

The six firms include state oil giants PetroChina ,  Sinopec ,  CNOOC Ltd , as well as  Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Group, China United Coal Bed Methane Co., and Henan Provincial Coal Seam Gas Development and Utilization Co., it said without giving further details.

Industry officials have said the eight blocks will cover a total area of 18,000 square kilometres.

China is keen to kickstart the sector by introducing more competition into the bidding process, and said all new shale gas blocks would be put up for tender by the ministry in the future.
